CBS News Segment on Nelene Fox and HMO Coverage Denials

In this CBS News segment, anchor Connie Chung tells the story of Nelene Fox and Mark Hiepler, who fought against the HMO that denied Nelene the treatment she needed.

Nelene Fox, attorney Mark Hiepler's sister, was diagnosed with breast cancer. When it was determined by her doctor that a bone marrow transplant was needed to save Nelene's life, her HMO denied coverage. The HMO claimed that the treatment was "experimental."

Mark Hiepler represented his sister in a bad faith insurance claim against the HMO, Health Net. Unfortunately, his sister passed away before the trial. A jury awarded her family an $89.3 million verdict.

"That's the one question that I will forever have in my mind and wonder. If she hadn't had to go through the anxiety and the many sleepless nights, if that would have made a difference." - Attorney Mark Hiepler about whether the denial of insurance contributed to her failing health
